I came up with this theory in 2004. During the year, 200% of the disks in my fileserver's 4-disk raid5 array failed. That's right, 8 drive failures in 12 months. Later on, our host, 2304.org suffered a two disk failure, which led to some downtime. I later heard that many other folks ran into the same problem, Maxtor disks generating a lot of bad sectors and then crashing. It'd seem like some kind of a manufacturing defect, but they're just too scared of lawsuits to confess. Nowdays we're running WD Raptors and Seagate Barracudas.
